¡Bienvenidos a Segundo Grado Salón 20!

Espero que ustedes estén igual de emocionados como lo estoy yo por comenzar este nuevo año escolar. Juntos nos divertiremos aprendiendo muchas cosas nuevas e increíbles.

Primero me presentaré, mi nombre es Monica Valbuena, he estado trabajando en Emerson School por 9 años. Yo soy de Colombia y llevo veintitrés años viviendo en Minnesota. Vivo en Minneapolis con mi esposo y mis dos hijos. Nosotros hablamos inglés y español en la casa. Me gusta leer, montar en bicicleta, nadar y pasar tiempo con mi familia y mis amigos.

Mi meta como maestra es despertar en mis estudiantes el deseo de aprender, explorar y ser creativos. Me gusta animar a los niños a hacer preguntas, a tener confianza en sí mismos y a alcanzar sus metas.

A continuación, encontrarán algunas ideas para preparar a su hijo/a para este año escolar.

• Lea con su hijo/a todos los días por 20 minutos. Permita que ellos/as escojan el libro que quiera leer. Pregunte qué parte del libro les gusto más y haga otras preguntas relacionadas con la historia.
• Anime a su hijo/a para que escriba en un diario todas las noches.
• Repase las diferentes maneras en que se puede formar 10 (8 + 2, 5 + 5, 7 + 3), contar de dos en dos (2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, ...) contar de cinco en cinco (5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, ...) y contar de 10 en 10 (10, 20, 30, 40, ...)
• Aunque vamos a comenzar nuestro año con clases a distancia recuerde que se recomienda que todos los niños en edad de escuela elemental duerman de 9 a 11 horas todos los días y que mantenga la misma rutina.
• Prepare un lugar limpio y callado donde el estudiante pueda hacer su trabajo. Asegúrese de que tenga todo los materiales que necesita (lápices, sacapuntas, colores, borrador, tijeras y un cuaderno).

Welcome to Second Grade Room 20!

I hope you are as excited as I am about this new school year. We are going to have a lot of fun and learn a ton of amazing things together.

First, let me introduce myself. My name is Monica Valbuena, I have been working in Emerson School for 9 years. I am from Colombia and I have been living in Minnesota for twenty-three years. I live in Minneapolis with my husband and my two kids. We speak English and Spanish at home. I like reading, biking, swimming, and spending time with family and friends.

My goal as a teacher is to spark the desire to learn, to explore, and to be creative. I encourage kids to ask questions, to be confident, and to achieve their dreams.

Here are a few ideas for helping your child get ready for this school year:

• Take time to read with your child for 20 minutes every day. Let them choose their favorite book. Ask them to tell you their favorite part and ask a couple questions related to the story. By doing this, they will restart their reading stamina.
• Encourage them to keep a journal and write every night.
• Review the different ways to make 10 (8 + 2, 5 + 5, 7 + 3), Counting by twos (2, 4, 6, 8, 10,...), five’s, (5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, ...) and tens (10, 20, 30, 40, ...).
• Even though we are going to start the year with distance learning, it is very important that all elementary school kids have between 9 and 11 hours of sleep a day and keep a regular daily routine.
• Create a clean and quiet space where the student can do their school work. Make sure that they have all the materials that they need: pencils, colors, eraser, scissors, pencil sharpener, and a notebook.
